We rolled into the TA around midnight after not seeing our support crew since mid-afternoon and having ridden 47km up some big hills with our pack rafts, done our pack rafting and a rogaine we were very pleased to see Mandy, Kelsey & Andy. Mandy made us the most amazing pea soup ( and that's saying something because I don't like peas! ) to warm us up before we set off on the car move that got us down to the kayak start TA.
Eating pea soup to the sounds of someone throwing up in the background is something you would only do on an adventure race ( someone in another team was throwing up, our team all had happy tummies )
After a quick sleep in the car we set out from the TA at 3am on a morning that had turned very cold.
Andrew got all the cowgirls in the kayaks with dry feet, he really is the best cowboy ever!
The 15km kayak leg included a portage which apart from having to get the kayaks up 7 metres of very steep bank, turned out be pretty easy as it was mostly across a field of long thick grass so we could slide the kayaks over the grass without damaging them. I got a bit of a fright when a fish jumped into the kayak early in the paddle and Michelle got a bit cold and tired and nearly fell asleep a few times so the cowgirls played a few rounds of eye spy to distract her from her tiredness and the fact that we may have told her we only had 1km to go when it was a bit more than that, with Michelle saying at one point "This is the longest kilometer in history!"
Somehow it took me 45 mins to change my clothes and drink two hot milos even though I kept moving the whole time...it must have been in slow motion!
